Nicolson Square Edinburgh (NSE), part of Central Hall Venues group, will play a leading role in Edinburgh’s famous Festival throughout August when it partners with inclusive Fringe venue, Greenside. Greenside, whose philosophy centres on opportunity for any artist to perform at the famous Fringe Festival, will host almost 70 shows at NSE throughout August.  NSE is one of three venues to host Greenside performances which between them make up around 13% of theatre shows at the 2022 Edinburgh Fringe, the 75th Anniversary Year.

NSE, situated only moments away from Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, takes centre stage with Greenside after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic which promises to be its largest programme ever. Each space at the venue will be taken up with a versatile range of performances with the rooms renamed by Greenside for the duration of the Fringe. NSE’s architecturally stunning Great Hall becomes the Emerald Theatre, while smaller spaces, Leith and Tollcross become Lime and Fern Studios. Meanwhile the venue’s courtyard area will be bustling with activity and a range of catering options provided by NSE’s new on-site caterer, Eats.

Shows at NSE will represent over 54 genres ranging from dance acts, immersive and physical theatre on the Great Hall’s impressive stage, drama and poetry in the Fern and Lime Studios, music, cabaret and variety performances, storytelling and even circus acts. There will also be a vast array of shows for families and children. Many of the performances are already expected to be a sell-out. Greenside chose NSE as one of its three Edinburgh Festival venues for its shared values of inclusivity, ethics and integrity, as well as its versatile event spaces and convenient location in the centre of the historic city.

Deborah Gallagher, NSE’s Head of Venue, comments: “We are thrilled to be playing a central role in this year’s 75th anniversary Edinburgh Fringe when Greenside return to the festival after a two-year break due to the pandemic. It’s very exciting to become one of the festival’s major hubs for a month and a real hive of activity with all kinds of interesting, thought-provoking performances.”

Greenside joint Directors, Darren Neale and Tara Stapleton, add: “It’s very exciting to be back at the festival after a long two years and we’re coming back bigger than ever before. We are proud to offer an Open Access venue where anyone can walk onto one of our stages, regardless of their age, background, experience, group size, genre and more, so NSE is the perfect partner for us in that we share the same values, while it also has some terrific event spaces right near the bustling Royal Mile. We’re really looking forward to a month of versatile performances at NSE with something for everyone, every day.
