About St Saviourgate York

St Saviourgate York (SSY) is a newly branded conference and events venue situated within the historic city walls of York. The venue is part of Central Hall Venues group, which manages venues in Edinburgh and Westminster.

St Saviourgate York lies within the Central Methodist Church York and was built to mark the centenary of Methodism and continues to maintain an active Methodist community at its heart.

We are proud that the building has played a vital part in Methodism in York.

For the last 30 years, the Central Methodist Church York has been home to Carecent, a local homeless charity, and Kyra, a registered charity supporting local women in making positive changes to their lives.

The building

The Chapel (now the Great Hall) and its grand organ were completed first, with the additional spaces being constructed over the following decade. During the second world war, the building was used as a canteen and entertainment space for soldiers stationed there.

Within the Gallery, a spectacular feature is The Organ. The Organ is the second largest in York and was built by John Brown (Of Elliot and Hill) in 1841 from Spanish mahogany; the 2,500-piped organ continues to be used regularly and is a key historical feature within SSY.

Our rich Methodist heritage is reflected in several rooms, such as the striking Great Hall, which features flashed glass windows, and the Fulford and Rawcliffe rooms, which can be combined using a remarkable piece of Victorian engineering – a movable wall, – to provide space for up to 200.
