Historic York filming location

If you’re looking for a unique and historic filming location in York, then you need look no further than St Saviourgate.

York has long been a popular choice for film sets, with some iconic blockbuster movies filmed on the streets of the city, or in several of its stunning locations. The coronation scene in the acclaimed Elizabeth (1998), which won a whole host of BAFTA awards including the Award for Outstanding British Film, was shot in York Minster Cathedral and scenes from the 2005 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, starring Johnny Depp, was shot in York as well as the recently produced and hugely popular Netflix series, Bridgerton, set in the Regency era. St Saviourgate has even been featured in the hit ITV series, Victoria, focussing on the young Queen’s accension to the English throne.

St Saviourgate York, situated just above the popular Shambles Market and within view of York Minster Cathedral, is available as a filming location in York with both the interior and exterior offering a combination of historical grandeur and versatility. This Grade II listed building, designed by James Simpson, dates back to 1840 as a Central Methodist Church.

Historic architecture

Outside, St Saviourgate York is a beautiful building with an iconic colonnaded portico frontage. The imposing and eye-catching architecture of the exterior of the building is enough to draw attention and provides the perfect backdrop for any outdoor filming location. It complements the 2000 years of history surrounding it, making York the ideal location for a historical set.

Inside the building, The Great Hall is an imposing and ornate room with high, decorative ceilings and stained-glass windows which have been beautifully preserved and flood the room with natural daylight. It has a two-tiered stage and an impressive balcony. The walls are lined with historic memorials and the focal point of the Great Hall is an intricate original organ.

Smaller rooms such as Fulford and Rawcliffe can be used separately or in conjunction with one another, by way of a moveable wall between the two spaces, as a unique feature of Victorian Engineering. With high ceilings, panelled walls, and large windows these rooms are another asset to any film set. Holgate is a small, quirky space with a large bay window filling the room with natural light, and an integrated kitchen at the other end. It has its own, exclusive entrance as well as being accessible via the main part of the building.
